[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]At the start of 2017, our TMC Academy Hawthorn Advanced 2 students had an enjoyable morning in Little India. Some of them had the opportunity to try on traditional Indian costumes. This experience prompted the curious ones to do additional research and deepen their knowledge on Singapore’s multi-racial culture.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
“Do people in your country wear traditional or western style clothes?”
On Thursday, January 26th, the school had an excursion to help us learn about Indian culture. That morning, my teachers and classmates organised an Indian fashion show. Thanks to them, I have learnt about some traditional Indian attire.
The first piece of clothing was a sari worn by our classmate Eva. A sari is a strip of unsewn fabric ranging from four to nine meters. It is wrapped around and draped over the body. The sari is worn with a kind of petticoat below and the top is a bodice leaving the belly area bare.
The second outfit was a Ghara Choli worn by Pla. It is a set made up of three pieces. The first piece is a short top that shows the belly and the back. It is worn with a long skirt that is embroidered or pleated. To finish the look, a long scarf covers the bare parts of the body.
Another common traditional outfit is the Churidaar Kurta; it is the most popular attire in India because it is very comfortable. I had the chance to experience what wearing one feels like. It is a long, elaborately decorated blouse with trousers underneath. A long scarf that drops down the back can be worn with this outfit.
Being very interested in culture, I asked myself if Indians wore these clothes every day. After doing some research, I learnt that men do not wear traditional clothes except for special events like weddings or religious holidays. As for the women, it all depends on the region they are from and if they are western-influenced. Do people in your country wear traditional or western style clothes?[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
